Wildfire on Warm Springs

Two structures burned and Hwy 26 is closed for a time.
- by Steve Coffee

A wildfire was burning on the Warm Springs Reservation late Thursday afternoon. Lisa Clark of the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch said the fire was burning on both sides of the Deschutes River having starting on the reservation before jumping the river to the east side.  Clark said a Structural Task Force was activated for structure protection. As of this report, the fire was between 500 and 1000 acres. No injuries have been reported. Peter Murphy of the Oregon Department of Transportation says Hwy 26 has been closed as a result of the fire danger and supression activity. Westbound traffic towards Portland  was being diverted at Madras north on Hwy 97 to Biggs Junction, then west on I-84. Eastbound traffic was being directed onto Hwy 216 to Maupin, then south on Hwy 97 to Madras. He said it was too soon to say how long the detours would remain in effect.

The fire has been dubbed the "Middle Fire". No cause is known yet.
