Oregon Literacy invites Scrabble® players of any age and skill level to enter The Very First Ever Central Oregon Scrabble tournament. The tournament is Saturday, April 26, 2008, at 11 a.m., Mazatlan Restaurant, 1302 S Highway 97, in Redmond. This fund-raising event will benefit Central Oregon adult literacy programs. Two out of five adults struggle to read, which affects their economic future, health, and families day in and day out. The Scrabble® tournament is being organized to raise awareness of adult literacy, to enable Central Oregonians to help strengthen existing literacy programs, and to reach new locales where literacy needs are unmet. The tournament begins at 11 am. The tournament format is teams of two playing two games of Scrabble®. Each team has one rack of tiles. Game 1 opponents are selected randomly. Game 2 opponents are based on scores, with the highest-playing teams playing each other. Local sponsors have kindly provided prizes for the highest-scoring teams. Entry fees are $25 per person, or $50 per two-person team. Early registration is recommended and walk-ins are gladly accepted. See tournament details and register online at http://oregonliteracy.org/events/scrabbleTransition.php. For more information about the tournament, contact Mary Yocom, 541-548-2930. You may also contact Oregon Literacy at 503-244-3898; toll free at 800-322-8715, or by email at www.oregonliteracy.org.
